Guest MJC Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 :D An interesting combination of problems... the story is too long to tell, but basically after a radio replacement and fixing of the windscreen wipers both the CC and the radio column stalk no longer worked. The garage and Ford main dealer have been unable to solve, so I think it's time to get my hands dirty and check things out for myself. Can anyone give me some points to check other than the basic wiring connections? The Gal is a V reg TDi Ghia X so has the electronic CC. Ta VM! Martin Quote
GSMGuy Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Most prob the sqealers have forgotten to plug the remote into the rear of the stereo, It's only a small plug and can quite easily fall back into the aperture. Not too sure on the cruise though. Mike Quote
Guest MJC Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Cheers Mike! I'll take a look and let you know . Martin Later......I took the column apart and found the connector to the stalk was disconnected... obvious thought was reconnect and all will be well. Unfortunately when I reconnected and turned the radio on it displays PHONE and nothing else happens. From some telltale holes in the dash I assume a phone was previously installed in the Gal. So do I need to trace some old phone wiring or something else? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Then a positive supply is going into the phone input terminal. Are you sure the plug is in the right hole in the unit? Quote
Guest MJC Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Yep the plugs will only fit in their appropriate holes... no other options. But I've now taken things apart and have discovered the following: On the radio unit there are four connectors:1. The speaker connection2. The aerial connection3. The power connection4. A yellow plug with five wires connected which appears to lead to the multiplug which connects to the column stalk. The wires are Grey, Blue, Red, Black and Green in that order with an empty connector before the Grey. There is no indication of any numbers. The multiplug on the column stalk has 6 wires in numbered connectors - 1. Brown2. Red3. Green4. Black5. Blue6. Grey There is continuity on all the wires between yellow plug and multiplug except Brown which is the earth. The blue is the wire I suspect is connected to the Mute terminal of the yellow plug, based on info at http://www.siocommunications.co.uk/Ford_Mutes.html So i guess the next step is to disconnect this cable and see what happens? LATER: I checked and it looks like someone has tried disconnecting the Blue cable by cutting it, as there is a piece of black wire soldered in place there. So do I cut it or not? I have put a meter across the multiplug to connect the blue and brown wires. This gives the same PHONE message as when the multiplug is connected to the column stalk. The current is 6mA by the way. Any ideas? Quote
Guest MJC Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 So I unsoldered the black/blue wire and connected the multiplug to the column stalk and hey presto the radio came on. Looking good so far, so I try to change to the CD...... nothing!! Switch off ignition reconnect blue/black cable, disconnect multiplug and CD works OK. SO I now know what the blue wire is for. So what is causing the PHONE message to appear? Is it when I earth the blue CD cable and if so why and how can I fix it? ;) ;) Quote
Guest MJC Posted April 17, 2005 Report Posted April 17, 2005 Having thought about this a bit more it's likely that the column stalk is faulty and is earthing the blue cable causing the PHONE error. As the garage are going to replace this next week I'll wait and see what happens. Quote
